“The Rule of Threes” When Incorporating Pattern

Pattern and texture really are the essentials to design. They create symmetry and provide visual interest, be it on a fabulous pair of leopard print pillows or a chunky-knit throw blanket. Incorporating these elements into your home’s decor can be intimidating. Many fear the print may look tacky or overwhelming, or become easily dated. As an interior decorator, I follow these guidelines to create a harmonious and stylish space.

The “Rule of Threes” applies to decorating with pattern, and it’s very simple:

1. Choose a dominant pattern. This is typically a large-scale print (geometric, floral, etc.) found on rugs, sofas or other big pieces of upholstered furniture.

2. Add a secondary pattern in a not-so-obvious way. Think drapes and side chairs.

3. Use a third pattern sparingly as an “accent in a room”, on accessories such as pillows, lamp shades and ottomans.

For example, if you choose a geometric pattern like large polka dots as your dominant, consider using a similarly-colored pattern for your secondary choice, and a small print for your third fabric. Pairing patterns this way will ensure an elegant and sophisticated design, rather than a room full of mismatched pieces.

A final note on pattern: One look at today’s fashion magazines illustrates that paisley is everywhere. The natural motifs and delicate scrollwork in paisley make it suitable for just about anyone who wants to update his or her decor. Try it with smaller items first, like a table runner or accent pillows. Two-toned paisley – black and white, for instance – looks so chic and modern.
